About

The constitution of the Ethics Committee for Health of ABC (CES-ABC) was approved by the ABC Executive Council on December 16, 2020.

The CES-ABC is responsible for ensuring compliance with high ethical standards in the field of research, education, or healthcare in health sciences areas, in order to protect and guarantee human dignity and integrity. Thus, the CES-ABC is tasked with issuing opinions and recommendations on ethical issues in the field of research, education, or healthcare provision at ABC, either on its own initiative or upon written request. Its opinions are not binding, without prejudice to what is determined in the legal regime relating to clinical trials in humans.

The Regulations of the CES-ABC were approved by the ABC Executive Committee on November 26, 2021.

The CES-ABC held its first meeting on February 25, 2021, and meets, as required by law, once a month. Meetings are held electronically, for a determined period, in accordance with contingencies and guidelines from competent authorities.

There is the possibility, when necessary and duly justified, to hold extraordinary meetings.

On April 14, 2023, the ABC Executive Council approved the inclusion of a new member (Dr. Cíntia Águas), replacing Professor André Pereira, who resigned.

At the meeting on June 20, 2023, Professor José Bragança replaced Professor Isabel Palmeirim, at her request.

The CES-ABC is composed of nine members, within the limits established by article 6 of Decree-Law No. 80/2018 of October 15, adhering to the requirements outlined in the same legal provision, specifically “the specific participation of certain professional areas such as medicine, law, philosophy/ethics, theology, nursing, pharmacy, and others that ensure the cultural and moral values of the community, in accordance with the institution’s object” (paragraph 2 of article 6), with this multidisciplinary composition being respected.
