This unit aims to create the necessary conditions for the development of new translational and clinical research projects in the medical-surgical fields, as well as in intensive care, with a special focus on areas such as neuroscience, oncology, cardiovascular, where augmented reality contributions will be utilized.
The Simulation Unit will enable the development of innovative techniques and advanced simulation courses using high-performance models in the fields of surgery and intensive care.
This unit will be integrated with the Experimental Surgery and Anatomical Theater Unit, complementing experimental surgery courses, particularly those involving cadavers, 3D printed models, or mixed reality technology provided by specific patients where integration of imaging (CT and MRI) also promoted by this center will occur. Investments in devices such as Microsoft HoloLens, Apple Vision Pro, and 3D Medical Printing from FormLabs provide essential information to the surgeon, crucial for innovation, always with the goal of adding knowledge about each specific patient for a more personalized approach. This will allow testing of new techniques to be developed at the Clinical Research Center or by national or international partners.
The Experimental Surgery and Intensive Care Support Unit will provide, starting in 2024, the development of advanced training courses to deepen and/or acquire knowledge in innovative techniques, as well as the ability to develop and test new therapeutic approaches, new equipment, and medical devices in emerging areas of surgery and intensive care.
This unit will closely collaborate with the Experimental Surgery and Anatomical Theater Unit, consisting of an advanced experimental surgery unit on cadavers and human tissues, as well as elements of augmented reality, with a state-of-the-art anatomical theater comparable to the most renowned units in Europe. This unit will have the capacity to conduct research in experimental surgery and also to develop new surgical techniques or optimize existing ones. With the contribution of various anatomical regions where oncological disease is most significant, this unit will provide the necessary conditions for delivering practical courses on innovative medical-surgical techniques in biological tissues, allowing the inclusion of foreign interns as well as the participation of the best international surgical specialists.
